Guiding Principles: Vision, Mission & General Objectives

 

Vision

 

The vision of the Library Association of Trinidad and Tobago (LATT) is to provide leadership in the Library and Information field, to establish standards and to promote the interests of its membership and libraries and information services, nationally, regionally and internationally.

 

Mission

 

The mission of the Library Association of Trinidad and Tobago (LATT) is to promote the growth and development of the library information professional as well as the advancement of library and information services, thereby ensuring access to information for all.

 

General Objectives

 

The general objectives of the Library Association of Trinidad and Tobago (LATT) are:

 

  • To provide an environment which will facilitate the growth and development of members of the Association
  • To develop and implement measures to safeguard professional status
  • To enhance the image of the Association
  • To increase the financial resources of the Association
  • To provide the appropriate infrastructure for administering the business of the Association
  • To impact on the development of national policy as it relates to library and information services
  • To promote the development of the highest quality services and maximum use of library and information resources

 


History: Inaugural Meeting and Incorporation

 

Inaugural Meeting

 

“The first meeting of the Library Association of Trinidad and Tobago took place at Federal House on 16th January, 1960.

In attendance were representatives from the Federal Library, Legal Library, Trinidad Public Library, S. & W.W.T.U., Presentation College, Carnegie Free Library, Central Library, Caroni Estates Ltd., Antigua Public Library, I.C.T.A., Readers and Writers Guild, Abbey School, British Council, Tranquillity Girls’ School, T. & T.E.C., Muir Marshall, Forest Dept., Agriculture Dept., Caribbean Commission and other interested persons.”

Incorporation

Governance: Executive Board

 

The Constitution of the Library Association of Trinidad and Tobago (LATT) outlines the composition of the Executive Board and the roles responsibilities of each Officer of the Board. Please refer to pages 10- 12 of the Constitution for guidelines on the formation and operation of a Special Interest Group. Awards

 

Schedule C (page) of the Constitution of the Library Association of Trinidad and Tobago (LATT) provides for the establishment of an Award for Meritorious Service to the Library Association. In 2004 Annual General Meeting, it was decided that those guidelines would be used to establish the Lynette Lashley-Hutchinson Award, which would be given for meritorious service. A monetary gift of no less than TT$ 500.00 would be given along with the Award

"The Lynette Lashley-Hutchinson Award is a tribute to the long and dedicated to the library profession by one of its stalwarts, a founding member of LATT, President of LATT from 1971-1972 and former Director of Library Services of the Central Library of Trinidad and Tobago. In recognition of her sterling service to the library profession, Lynette C. Hutchinson A.L.A., F.L.A. was honoured in the National Awards of 1990 with the Public Service Medal of Merit."
